Description
Amarnath (अमरनाथ गुफा मंदिर) is one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir, the shrine is famous for the naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam inside the Amarnath Cave.
About Amarnath Yatra
The cave is situated at an
altitude of 3,888 meters (12,756 ft) in the Himalayas.
                            The ice lingam
                            is formed
naturally every year by the freezing of water drops that fall from the cave roof.
The size of the lingam varies
with the moon’s cycle and is considered a divine miracle.
                            According to legend, Lord Shiva
narrated the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati here.

Religious Significance
                            Amarnath is considered one of
the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva.
                            It is believed that a
                            pilgrimage here grants liberation (moksha).
                            Devotees chant “Bum Bum
                                Bhole”
and “Har Har Mahadev” throughout the yatra.
